It has been a few weeks since the series begun and all of them had a few chapters published in Champion Cross.
I will analyse theirs number in Champion Cross and give some of my thoughts on the series so far. , but at the moment of writing these are the numbers and it might suggests which series will survive in the long term. Overall, I imagine all series will receive a promo in Champion Cross for volume releases which could help some to break out.
Marimo Kyoudai no Saihenji
Releases on Saturday
Marimo Kyoudai no Saihenji is a comedy series focused on the daily life of triplets. Two of the brothers are famous and handsome whilst the third one with glasses is the common one. The drama of the third one is that he is wants a quite school life, and he wants to hide that he is their brother. It is a light hearted episodic with with the third brother acting as the straightman to the antics of the other two brothers and his classmates.
The numbers it has achieved are good. It tends to show in the top 10 on chapter releases, and in this latest week it was number 1 on Saturday. Overall, obviously its partially because the authors already had a social media following. Marimo is a pleasant series, its comedy is light, and since it is episodic and quite short in page it has like 10 pages or so, it is a quick read.
The appeal it for me has for female readers is its biggest weapon and why it likely was turned into a series to begin with. Many of the hit series from Champion recently such as Iruma-kun, Tougen Anki and Vampire Dies in No Time had a big female readership.
Daure's Crown was the second series to debut. The story focuses on Rei, a former top assassin that seems to want to live a normal life. He meets the main female character a goody girl Sera that is the daughter of the priest that runs a local church. He is convinced by her to stay at the Church that already has other characters similar to him residing there.
It has the best art out of the round as well as in general the most stable level of quality. The series describes itself as a action, slice of life series and it has been exactly that so far. its first few chapters leaned more on the light comedy and slice of life side with attempts to develop the main character that suggests conflict is not far off.
Champion works are usually rough especially when they are done by a newbie, but this work is actually quite polished. I am not exactly hooked but it does feel worth reading, it is much better than Tougen Anki in overall quality.
It has not done well in numbers in Champion Cross. We can not be sure of how it has been received in the magazine, but for me its survival will depend on whether it manages to draw in female readers. My suggestion for the author is to add a rival cool looking main character that shows up often to interact with the main character.
You are a Four Leaf Clover
Releases on Friday
The third series to debut was You are a Four Leaf Clover. The series focuses on Uichi, a high school student that has a terrible life. When he was young he was a charismatic child and he was friends with Yotsuba the main female character. Yotsuba comes back in his life when it is at its lowest point and she manically wants to help Uichi get back to his feet and that involves putting down all the people that dragged him down.
The series is peculiar, like I mentioned in my previous post Koushi the author had previously only written comedy series and whilst You are a Four Leaf Clover still has a comedic vibe it does demonstrate dark themes such as self harm, bullying etc. Overall, Its a series that will be about uplifting someone from a terrible situation, but things cant just suddenly become very good for the main character, so I wonder how that will work out.
In terms of numbers, it has done better than Daure's Crown but not by much, but it did debut two weeks later. It is still not really a great number, but lets see how it develops.
Mogaku
Releases on Saturday
Mogaku was the last series to debut. It follows Kazunari, a boy who after the death of his father works delivery boy on his bike to help his mother raise his other three younger siblings. Things change after an accident and he finds that the burden of taking care his family falls all on him. With no alternative and desperate to support his family, his employer introduces him to the world of Keirin and the money that can be made from it entices Kazunari to pick up the bike and become a Keirin racer.
The numbers have been good, it is peculiar that it has less likes than stars. Stars are harder to get because it is basically a follow, so you need to be logged in whilst you do not need it to leave likes and you can even leave up to 10 likes. The writer and artist did not have an online presence, so that was not a factor. These numbers make me optimistic for the success of this series.
The main draw of Mogaku is the intensity in the key moments, it is really like an old school shonen manga it is meant to fire up people. The art is rough and patchy but it uses that to really make the key expression of the main character and emphasise the movement and the amount of effort by the characters.
A rival character has been teased already and it seems like a good looking character, the main character which can only help with female readers, I am sure many more are to come. Mogaku has not done much wrong so far in my eyes as a shonen sport series. I expect it to be successful.
